DESCRIPTION:
EPW - Robert Roskell, London, "Improved Skelet Lever" Swiss made mvt of mid nineteenth century vintage with engraving to a Civil War surgeon of the Confederacy, decorative plate design featuring a snake coiled around a tree trunk and also featuring a bird, 57mm, silver or silver plated original 13 sided case engraved on front with ship scene and on rear with country scene, cuvette bearing attributes including "Rail Way Timekeeper" marking, inner front lid with engraving "A M Bourland MD, May 1859," KWKS, WE impressed SSD, lever escapement, 13J, gilt mvt, s#6663 on case only. Addison McArthur Bourland M.D. was born August 27th, 1825 and at the age of 37 on March 20th, 1862 began a 15 month enlistment serving the Confederacy as a surgeon for the 15th Northwest Arkansas Infantry Regiment. Dr. Bourland passed away March 13th, 1913 and his grave is located in Van Buren, Arkansas at the Fairview Cemetery.
CONDITION:
Mvt: Ticks temporarily with a twist, OH needed, excellent plus mvt condition overall; dial with a light hl from center toward upper right, tiny flake at seconds-register hole; fine hands, hour and seconds hands are blue, minute hand is plum colored and has some bend; case shows light wear, typical MFS, two dents to right of rear, some small mild dents or dings elsewhere, reduced engraving detail but remains distinct and attractive, front liftspring broken or not functioning correctly, front opening a small bit wide of 90 degrees; bow is crudely pinned and pivots freely with side to side play, push shows medium wear and has play within pendant; good glass crystal.
